I worked in maintenance for over 30 years, I had to rebuild hydraulic and air cylinders all the time. They have pistons and rings them in them as well.

From the auto industry, hood and deck lid and lift gate supports are “gas struts”. In the case of most liftgates and some deck lids they are powered but still called struts.

In the test lab hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders is the terminology for apply loads or cycles.

If you're talking about the power convertible roof, I believe those are electric. I had a fourth gen convertible that was hydraulic, split the reservoir, and made a huge mess.

The vert tops are hydraulic w/ an electric pump.
