2018 ZL1 Oil Pump Replacement

Subject: 2018 Camaro ZL1 1LE

Oil used: Mobil 1 ESP X3 0W-40 or Mobil 1 15W-50
Oil pressure: 40 psi (cold idle), 30 psi (warm idle), 40+ psi (cruise)

Decided to pre-emptively replace the oil pump since the car and motor are too expensive to be considered throwaways, and I rather like the car for track use.

Dis-assembly starts the next weekend.

Parts Purchased:

(qty 1) GM GENUINE 24504031 Oil Dipstick / Tube Seal $9.45
(qty 1) GM GENUINE 12646872 Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) Valve $45.89
(qty 1) ACDELCO 12646386 Timing Chain $57.75
(qty 1) GM GENUINE 12630107 Timing Chain Tensioner $36.79
(qty 2) GM GENUINE 12657430 Water Pump Gasket $3.39
(qty 1) GM GENUINE 12663624 Idler Pulley $63.79
(qty 1) GM GENUINE 12665845 Idler Pulley $55.99
(qty 1) GM GENUINE 12678295 Idler Pulley $51.79
(qty 1) GM GENUINE 12678515 Idler Pulley $42.79
(qty 1) GM GENUINE 12686229 Belt Tensioner $54.79
(qty 1) GM GENUINE 11547372 Harmonic Balancer Bolt $15.41
(qty 1) GM GENUINE 12639086 Throttle Body Gasket $6.80
(qty 1) GM GENUINE 12668317 V-Ribbed Serpentine Belt $69.94
(qty 1) ACDELCO 12643218 Belt $17.67
(qty 1) ACDELCO 12685983 Belt $14.50
(qty 1) ACDELCO PF64 Oil Filter $3.49

Going for DIY.

It looks like the components that need to be removed are:
Front crossmember
Oil pan
Belts
Crankshaft Damper
Water pump
Front main cover
Oil pump

Use real oil you say? Why is the hyped up Mobil1 inferior to whatever this supposed "real oil" is? How many ZL1s or LT4 engines blown up because of the hyped up Mobil1 from a STOCK persepctive? The oil pump is the issue, NOT THE OIL.

There have been many, many ZL1/ZL1 1LEs (to include mine) that have been throughly tracked on a road course and haven't had issues with the stock oil. Same can be said and about all the other Camaro's too. There has also been a 2017 ZL1 that has been taken to over 210k miles with this "inferior" oil and had zero issue and only had the basic maintenance done when required.

ZLElvira,

Please do tell us which is the “real oil” we should be using.

I’m in PA as well. If it works out, would you be willing to do mine for a fee?

Let’s chat afterwards. I’m usually open to helping another but I’m also fairly firm on pre-requisites and constraints to avoid either party ending up worse off than where started.

We have won multiple 24h of Le Mans using Mobil 1 oil. I can assure you that it is indeed real oil.
