Transferring ownership of an old car with no title

Hi everyone,

So my project of building a 69 Roadrunner has come to an end. There is just no way I can finish this car. So I am trying to sell it and I am pretty sure I have a buyer but heres my issue: I bought the car from a dealer in Alabama with no title just a signed bill of sale, I am in NY. I contacted Alabama DMV but could find nothing about getting any sort of title from them. As well I contacted NYS DMV and any car older than 1973 is not titled here as well, you can register it with a signed bill of sale. Obviously being that the car never ran there was no reason to register it. So now I am trying to sell it I have an interested person in Michigan, does anyone know what he needs from me to take possession of the car and eventually register it in Michigan? I assumed a notarized bill of sale from me (along with the original transferring it to me) would be enough. Thanks!

It seems to vary by state. Your original bill of sale and a bill of sale from you should be all that is needed.

Maybe this will be helpful: http://search.dmv.org/dmv/lost-car-title

New York State does not issue a title certificate for any motor vehicle of model year 1972 or older, travel or utility trailer that weighs less than 1,000 pounds, or limited used motorcycle (including a moped).

Info taken from this site: http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/broch/c19.htm

According to this, you should be good to go with no title. Maybe a notorized bill of sale?
If a MI title is required for the new owner, it would be his issue not yours, I believe.

I also found this on the Michigan DMV website:

Frequently Asked Questions

Vehicles
What vehicles are exempt from Michigan's titling and registering requirements?

Answer:
Every motor vehicle, trailer coach, and trailer driven or moved on public roads must be title and registered. Under Michigan law the following vehicles are exempt from titling and registering:

Passenger vehicles registered in another state operated by a nonresident for up to 90 days (new residents must title and register their vehicles immediately).
An implement of husbandry (farm tractors and equipment).
Any vehicle owned by the United States government.
A trailer weighing less than 2,500 pounds is exempt from titling but must be registered (a title may be issued on request). All trailer coaches must be titled and registered.
A vehicle driven or moved upon the highway using the most direct route (round trip) for the purpose of:
obtaining a weight receipt from a weigh master,
obtaining a physical inspection from a law enforcement agency, or
obtaining a salvage recertification inspection.
A moped is exempt from titling, but must be registered.

It looks like Michigan requires a title no matter what the age of the vehicle.
Not sure what your buyer would do in this case.

Alabama only titles model year 1975 and up vehicles. Bill of sale is all you get here....

I'd bet all they have to do is take the bill of sale to the DMV who will then issue a title. No way they'd be the first person to show up with this particular issue.

In any event, thats the buyers problem, not the sellers. As a seller its not your responsibility to know whether the buyer can titler/register a vehicle in their home state.

Him buying it is contingent on this... he says its not worth it for him to buy the car if this is gonna be a big issue.

That said he figured it out this morning and we are good to go! Thanks for the help!
