Arrow BEST Max Effort CAMSHAFT ???

Let’s say someone had a spare LT4 laying around — ported heads, Kong X-ported blower, and everything ready to run.
The only question left: Which camshaft actually makes the most power? If you had to put money on it… who’s your pick?

I have the Katech Track Day CAM... but, I honestly think the LMP LT4 "Big" Camshaft will make the most power, with all other things brought up to be equal.

Probably a custom cam.

LMP's posting videos about an LTR-block 2650 car making 1400, and he's talked about his personal 1100 horse' 1740 car with cams he designs. I'm just saying it's probably hard to say because you could stab a race car cam in there that won't hardly work on the street but make 1200, but require custom LTs and intake and all that to support it. Where you could take a 230-range cam and get into the 4-digits with pretty standard stuff. Where does it end? How far do you want to go? How much can you tolerate? He's running at the ragged edge of that 1.7. Unless you go with different fuel, you'll run out of that blower before you run out of power on a PD platform.

The bigger the better? lol. As power goes up, the more finicky the car is.

My bet would be on a custom grind from GPI, or Bumpstick Bobby / Cam Motion. Alec from LMP is also on top of my list. Can’t wait for the cam shootout.

I don't think there is a such thing as a "best camshaft". It all comes down to the tuning, altitude, and conditions at the time of the dyno. Different cam profiles do different things. Some cam grinds provide good peak numbers. Others provide strong mid-range.

Most custom cams probably come from TSP and CompCams anyways.

I think this is probably the absolute best take that anyone could have regarding the matter. What works for one will not work for all.

You'll need max overlap to make max hp, and that will result in a car that's basically undrivable on the street. I would ask LME and other top builders

Yes sir... clearly the word "best" is subjective, and dependent on the goals of the car... that said, what cam do you think would make the most power?

Not everyone's BEST CAM is the same. I do not care about peak power, big numbers or something that comes on like a switch with zero throttle control. What I care about is being able to blend the throttle as accurately as I can with my right foot, balancing this heavy Beyotch over a blind cresting hill under the bridge and dropping like a roller coaster 80+ feet downhill into a flat right hand turn where my tires are using the last inch of pavement at 120+mph across the Start/Finish line!

Its this incredible tractability of power that has me completely mesmerized and wanting more, but can I find the best of both worlds?

I'm thinking a lightweight valvetrain upgrade, stock cam and Johnson Short travel lifters might unlock a few more ponies but keeping the VVT for the monster torque down low. My Dragy Laps shows short-shifting at 5200rpms with my A10 was worth two seconds per lap!

What aftermarket cam can do that? The A10s are already known for keeping the engine at elevated sustained high RPMs... what if I program to shift earlier to make the engine last longer?

I wish I could be more help, but I honestly don't know. How would you even test for this scientifically? Swap cams in the same car on the same day for multiple pulls? Then each cam needs tuning to get the most out of it.

You might be better off asking AI this question to see who's made the most claimed horsepower out of all the data published on the web. But even that should be scrutinized. I vaguely recall somebody claiming 1,200hp with a stage 1 cam and supporting mods. A stage 1! ....and I believe it.

In my personal experience, my Terminator 2 cam appears to be a midrange cam but Jannetty made great peak numbers. 25hp and 100ftlb more torque than a YouTube influencer's peak horsepower cam that was installed by a reputable shop here in the northeast.

So I really don't know. Every time I feel like I have cam knowledge sorted out, someone comes and defies conventional wisdom with unusual results.

If you're looking to throw money at a project, cams are cheap enough to buy multiple so you can experiment. Usually in the ballpark of $500 aside from drivetrain modifications. Maybe buy 2 or 3 top end cams and run your dyno test. Then sell the ones you decide you won't keep at the end of the build.

Ted's terminator cam is pure magic. I love those guys and I want him to be successful, but I'm secretly hoping his cam doesn't sell so there could be no other competition for me out there. hahahahah It is sooooooo linear and I can't wait to get back on the race track in a couple of weeks for my first performance review. I have a 1000 crank horsepower car that I commuted in the pouring rain with. It's unbelievable. Then in the dry when I get on it, I can break traction at will, at triple digit speeds from all the power whenever I want to scare my friends. When I'm hoping for max traction, I can roll right into it and the car just goes into warp 10 with no slippage.

All of my friends with deep pockets have asked to buy the car from me.

For your average ZL1 build, the BTR 1 is plenty of cam. The combination that drives the best and provides overall better all-around performance is what I would want.

I'm very happy with Ted's terminator cam, too. My car is a true Jekyll and Hyde now, and the power is just right for me.
