Why is the tank under my coolant reservoir empty

This might be a really stupid question. I have never paid it no mind. Was doing an oil change last night and my buddy noticed and made a comment. I have noticed myself in the past but I have never had any cooling issues so I ignored it. Just curious is all.

You are low on coolant. add to the overflow tank(bottom) and the top will fill.

Thank you sir. I am going to go check it out later. I would of assumed if it was that low everything in the top tank would drain to the lower but perhaps that path is higher on the top tank if that makes sense. I really didnt pay it no mind, but I am going to flush my Maggie today with new coolant so I will pick some up for the car as well. Appreciate the feedback.

top tank should always be full.
The fill line is actually visible on the lower tank. You may need a funnel to add to the lower reservoir.

Right on fellas. Like I said, this car has never overheated or got hot, so I didnt pay it no mind. Its one of those things where someone else sees or hears something and for you its normal and they call it out. LOL.

Well that was embarrassing to say the least. I decided to go check it out and WALA theres a small "dexcool" on the back side of the lower reservoir to fill it. Dont I feel stupid. LOL Shit between the 2 tanks I used about 3/4 gallon. Something to note, the lower reservoir has a small pin hole on the side for overflow.

Nope it works the other way on these cars. For whatever reason the coolant on newer GM vehicles evaporates over time.

I had to add coolant to mine the other day as well. I had to steal one of my kitchen funnels that was small enough to actually fit in the lower tank.

I like to use a $0.99 cent squeeze bottle form the dollar store. Basically like the sold school ketchup bottles bottles at burger dives from the 80's lol.

I'm glad I saw this thread, my lower reservoir is empty and I think has been since I got the car. I just assumed it was some kind of overflow. I know the car is not overheating or reducing power, though. A couple street encounters have confirmed.

At least it's something to do today.

Yes sir. I felt stupid. I mean I have had a Maggie on the car for over 3 years and that tank has always been empty. I never even thought about it because I dont have cooling issues. When my buddy asked about it last week I decided to post. I had coolant here and a small funnel for my Harley so I filled both up. There is a small breather hole on the side of the lower "empty" tank. I didnt realize and as I was filling, it started to flush out so that was my sign to stop. LOL Now I have to much coolant in the tanks. Apparently it will evaporate out
