Finish appears rough to the touch

Hi all,

I noticed that my car was on the dealer lot for about 3 months prior to my purchase.

The finish is a bit rough to the touch, but very nice shine and mirror like, but just rough to the touch. I improved this dramatically by putting 3 coats of wax on it. Next wash will be clay barring it to take out contaminants and putting on a sealer.

My Silverado was near perfect, but it only sat on a Chevy dealer lot for about 1 week.

I have not done any Ceramic sealants before, and have always had best luck with just waxing, clay baring and sealing like Jet Seal. Use a mix of Chemical Guys and Adams.

Any other thoughts to get the slippery smooth surface back. Never had these issues with my past Cadillac or Porsche.

its got embedded contaminates. It needs to be clayed to remove them, can also hit with chemical decon with an IronX and something to remove tar and sap

Perfect, thanks for the response. I will do those.

That being said, the car is a blast. Handles like a sports car but with a naturally aspirated V8

2SS is absolutely right. Using a sandwich bag over your hand and running you hand on the wet surface will really let you know when the paint is smooth and contaminant free.

IronX is some NASTY stuff, but I would also highly second using that as your car sat so long.

The clay process can scratch the surface, and most people get it done prior to a polish/wax/seal etc.

It isnt always a big deal, just a heads up. I decontaminated and clayed my own car, and hit it with a dual action polisher afterwards and it was factory perfect again.

using proper lubrication and a good clay wont scratch. When I got my car last month, I clayed it with ONR mixed to around 64:1 used it very heavy and this is the caly towel I use. I had zero marring on my paint after. Now thats not to say a heavy contaminated car wont scratch if you are not cleaning the clay towel off in a bucket after every panel. I do that anyway. I clean the towel in a bucket of ONR after every section I do.

Like others have said, clay bar and a good spray wax lubricant works wonders. Meguiars makes a good one.

Dude, I use ONR for everything. I LOVE that stuff.

Maybe that is why I didnt really have much if any work with the DA polisher.

Yea, I have been using ONR for years. So much faster. I recently just got the new P&S Absolute rinseless. I will say i like it alot. It glides over the paint smoother feeling then ONR does.

Update: I clay barred and that was the issue. Had be sure to use plenty of lub to keep from scratching. Put on another coat of wax after each body panel. No longer rough to the touch.

Thanks for the comments.

It's a good practice to polish the paint after claying. Chances are you do have some slight marring, if that matters to you.

I'd take it back to the dealer if you just picked it up. The paint is etched and probably will require wet sanding or you could do it yourself but the dealer should have taken care of that before you picked it up. Good luck.
