50 state emissions?

I have started looking for a replacement for my recently destroyed 2018 ZL1 A10 (Whoever gave 6th-gens a 5-star rating for rollovers was definitely on point, and wrong-way drivers suck)

..and I had been under the impression that the days of sub 50-state emissions.. (I remember a lot of stuff in the 1990s-2000s was either built as 49-state, or California emissions equipped) .. I thought that was all in the past.

But as I expand my search beyond California, I am seeing things on the equipment list like: "Emissions, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington state requirements", or "Emissions, California state requirements" .. and I am wondering if the prospect of buying out of state and flying out to bring it home is going to work.

Is there anyone who has any experience with buying out of state and had to deal with registration issues, or proving compliance with whatever state they live in?

The dealer is not supposed to sell you a new car if it does not meet your state requirements. I bought my Shock in Missouri and they originally said they could not sell to me in New York until they noticed the invoice said it was ok for the Northeast (luckily it was ordered that way by the dealer)

I bought my car in Texas. Flew out there and drove it home in April.

My research showed that all Camaros as of roughly the last 10-15 years are 50 state cars in regard to smog. there are no 6th gen camaros missing secondary cats, any other smog equipment, etc.

When you bring the car to CA, you will need a smog check, and you will need a vin inspection to register it. Dealer I bought it from said they would take care of everything, but that was wrong.

CA DMV does a vin inspection for free and I recommend that. There are services that you can pay to do this for you, but its a waste of money. You can just get in line at the DMV next to the drivers license test line and they have people there that just do vin checks. they give you a signed form once they verify your vin. One of the things they check for, is a 50 state smog sticker in the engine bay. When i found my car, before flying out, I requested the dealer send me a pic of the sticker in the engine bay.

One more note.. there are cars that are not allowed to be sold in CA new unrelated to smog. for example the 2020 ZLE due to the copper/brake issues. There are requirements on miles, not sure on years, for the car to be registered in CA. I know it must have 7500 miles do be considered used, but I dont remember the year requirement. There may not have been one.

pm if you have any other questions in case i forget to check back.

Just about any newer car sold by the major manufacturers is 50 state legal.

Bought my ZL1 earlier this year from Iowa and drove it back. As mentioned, a smog check then inspection from DMV will allow you to register the car.

I did have some title issues due to covid delays at Iowa DMV. I got a couple extensions but there was like a week where my tags were expired and the dealership could not send an extension yet because of their DMV delays. Other than that, buying a car out of state is pretty straight forward if it passes smog.

Please refer to the following California DMV document for all info:

Fast Facts 29 - Buying a Vehicle From Out of State – Can You Register It in California?

It basically covers the few exceptions to the rules.

The car itself is 50-state legal.
There is an emissions option for California which gets you a decal which helps the California certification process. No hardware with that option, just a sticker.
