Why do dealers do this? 2019 2ss I saw for sale

Just a funny thing that I see dealers do with used cars around here from time to time.

Recently a used car dealer up the road, a family owned one that is well known locally and owns 3 lots has a 2019 Camaro 2SS convertible for sale. 28,000 miles and listed as a rental. It doesn't have the NPP and looks like the ones that Hertz has so it's likely they bought it at auction when Hertz Corporate car sales locations shutdown recently.

Anyway, when they got the car they listed it for something like $32,000 which is a great price for a rag top 2ss fairly new (yes I know rental) but then I went online tonight just to see what Camaro is going for right now and I noticed they jacked the price up to around $37,800!!!

The thing is the last couple of weeks the used Camaro inventory has rebounded and prices have gone down. A chevy dealer locally to has one for $36,800, 2ss convertible and less miles, same car and a few more features. The used car lot also wasn't running any rebates or specials on that when it was listed at 32k.

Local ford dealer did that with a 2017 base model GT too I was looking at before I bought my Camaro. Was on their site for 2 months. Price was decent then they jacked it up 2 k after it was sitting on their lot. Again, base model. Glad I kept an eye on that price BS and went and bought the Camaro instead because the dealer had no BS pricing on the Camaro and was upfront.

I just find that amusing though. When I look for used cars I keep my eye on prices like that.

They bs their prices all the time.

When i traded my tacoma in to a dealership, a few days later when they listed it for sale they marked the price as "WAS 39,900 NOW 36900." no..it wasn't "39,900" i JUST sold it to you. Lol

Around here, I can buy a new 1SS 1LE for roughly the same price as a used model. Dumb.

Yea, back in Sept a local Chevy dealer had 4 2020 1SS left over, automatics and NPP exhaust on the lot and with dealer incentives the cars were around $36,500. Except for the leather interior and heated seats the 2ss has, they were loaded up 1ss to boot.

I nearly bit and went to see what they'd offer me for my Mustang but I went with a low miles 2016 2ss for 5 grand cheaper.

Some of the dealers list their internet prices rock bottom while some list the same sticker price they use on their lots.

I would figure those higher prices ones you could haggle them down. Mine was priced rock bottom but I tried haggling anyway and the sales manager came and talked to me. I'm 37 and I think he was shocked how good I was at haggling lol for my age.

Have to watch new car prices as well and the fine print with online prices.

Covid has driven used car prices at dealers through the roof. I've worked at new car dealers since 1995. Supply and demand. Seen the same thing with guns and RV's.

Remember people! When you are shopping for a Camaro or any other performance car: you want it but YOU DON'T NEED IT.

Say that to the salesperson's face.

Why do dealers do this: Because it’s the most noble profession and they never lie.

Totally agree. But currently there is a glut of Mustangs and Camaros in my area. Used mustangs because of that have gone down in price. As I said the used Camaros have went down in price lately as well.

I guess that's a good thing because back in Sept if there was a better selection in Mustangs I might have bit and got one actually there was a 2016 GT, CS at an excellent price, couple grand cheaper than my SS BUT I didn't feel like driving 30 miles for it. I guess a good thing I didn't because I like the SS more than the Coyote engine now!

I think I found the reason why they jacked the price of the convertible up. It's because it's season here and they're figuring some snowbird will want a soft top to drive in the nice weather. I'm sure they will find a sucker for it since many people don't shop around. The car wasn't generating interest so they said F it and jacked the price up.

The dealer sticker (used sticker) on the lot was 35k for my car because I have the window sticker and the internet price was 4k lower. I'm sure some schmuck who doesn't look online wouldn't know that and end up talking the dealer down to 33k while I paid lower than internet price.

That's why so many people will fly somewhere to buy a car. I myself have made 3 long distance car buys and all 3 I regretted as I should have just returned home after seeing their true condition. I now only buy new, sick of finding other people's nightmares. Especially with today's used car market prices.

Not really... Dealers make their money on new cars through a combination of actual profit margin, add-on's in the finance office, and back-end cash from the manufacturers for meeting their sales goals. That means that the actual selling price of the car can be closer to their cost because there are other areas they can generate profit.

With a used car, they can either sell an extended warranty or put it through a CPO process. If they're selling a brand they can't certify, then it's either an increased profit margin over cost or an extended warranty. And, think about it... Would you rather pay more for a car that's being sold as having no issues, or save a few bucks and "need" the extended warranty?

Used cars as a general 'product' have increased in value. Specific models have to be looked at through an individual lens, though. Weekend cars (sports cars, muscle cars, etc.) are NOT increasing in value because the market is seeing an influx in inventory from cars being traded for more economical models, consolidations of multiple vehicles down to one, or repossessions.

Depends on location. Here in Southwest FL you can find used Camaros, Mustangs, Corvettes with low miles and great prices and great condition. Reason why is a lot of old guys buy these cars and they sit in the garage a lot and eventually they end up trading them in because they're hard to get in and out of. My Camaro low miles was owned by an old guy snowbird and very low miles and great deal.

Lots of 2016 thru 19 Camaros, vettes, mustangs with under 25k miles on them down here. Especially used Vettes you can get very very low mile ones.

I can’t say as I’ve encountered this up here.

My ‘18 was listed with a in-dealer finance & trade assistance discount. So the price was $500 more than the internet price, which was disclosed in the ad & I knew I wasn’t trading anything in. The price tag hanging from the mirror matched their advertised price.

The deal for the ZL1 was in process before they even had pictures up on Autotrader. My trade price was set, credit processing down to interest rate & paperwork were ready when I arrived. Looked it over & drove it while they took my SS for a drive & inspection. I got back to the dealer & went right to closing. Easy peezy. In & out in about an 1 1/2 hrs. All of this happened within about 18hrs of me contacting them on it.

The "fly and drive" method should NEVER be used with used cars. Only new cars. Like you yourself said, once you are there and see their true condition, its hard to walk away and you end up regretting the purchase after the fact.

For New cars, this is a blast. There is no better way to get to know your new car and break it in at the same time as a cross country trip. This way you can also get great deals from dealers that are not in your area. This is especially true with specialty new sports cars.

Example: When the 2013 shelby came out with the 662hp. They were selling for way over sticker. But remember not every Ford dealer that gets one will sell it because not every market is good for sports cars. So I found one for a friend from exhaustive internet searching that was sitting on a dealers lot for months in some backwater town in the south. It was a pickup truck town and nobody ever bought sports cars from this dealer. Turns out the Shelby, unlike most", was red stickered for invoice and sitting out on their front line for a few months. It was the deal of the century. My buddy bought it and was able to flip it for several thousand over its sticker, which he didnt pay.

This is true here where I live in FL. The crappy part of Florida is that there is no cap on dealer fees. They are asking an extra $1000 or more over TTL and more for doc fees. This is all fluff and there is no way Im going to pay that. So I'll fly to another state for $79 one way and drive my new car back saving probably close to $1200 in the process. Plus a cross country trip back in a brand new camaro is going to be a fun ride.
