Shifting into 5th Gear vs Reverse (while stopped)

Finally found a 1LE at nearby dealer and went to check it out - considering buying one. The stupid dealer didn't want to let me drive, so all I could do was sit, start and play with stuff. I was checking clutch and shifting while at idle.

Question: I found it almost impossible (while stopped) to shift into 5th, without it going into reverse. Also a bit hard to shift into 6th, without overshooting to the right and being locked out. Is this normal behavior? When moving forward is the reverse true, that it will lock out R and force it into 5th at the far right up?

Sounds like a stupid question, but I just want to make sure. Car would be primarily a track car and need a fast and sure 4-5 shift.

Thanks in advance.

4-5 shifts, and 5-6 shifts are a non-issue. The reverse gate has a lock-out that's MPH triggered. On the Camaro it won't let you into reverse until you're damn near stopped.

FYI, a 4-5 shift is at 140 MPH on the track.

Thank you. So when you shift from 4 to 5 while on the move you can shift all the way to the far right and up, like on other 5/6-speeds that don't have reverse there? Or do you need to be careful not to go to far right?

Yes, the joys of GM's ultra long gears. A few tracks I go to have end of straight speeds around 140-145. Will make it interesting to decide on shifting vs bouncing off the limiter.

There's a reverse lockout. You can slam into 5th if you so desire.

Once you are over 5mph you are locked out of reverse.
