Tire Failure Question

I was on my way for a little "staycation" with my wife this past weekend and my rear tire failed. And by fail, I mean side wall blow out. It was like a perfect 2 inch vertical slice in the side of the tire. This happened as I was getting off the I-10 going about 75-mph and was starting to slow down when my tire pressure warning came on and read 5-lbs, then quickly 0. Keep in mind that I'm in AZ and the temp was 106 that day so the pavement could have easily been 130. Any ways, I immediately pulled into a store to take a look, thinking it was probably a nail, and saw the entire wheel flat with this massive cut in the side. The really weird part is I never hit anything, at least that I know of. The car has about 19-k miles on it and the tread is at about 60%. I guess my question is, is this normal? Or should I be concerned about my other tires?

I was able to slowly drive the car (10-mph) to a discount tire and get a replacement but I'm kind of weirded out. I have never had a tire fail like that before and I've been driving for 20+ yrs. For reference, I have the 18" Goodyear's, non run flat. Also, the stock wheels on the LT are not the prettiest but they are pretty damn durable. I babied the car to DT but it was a good 4 miles from where I was originally with the flat. With no spare, I really had no other option but the wheel held up great and was able to balance.

Thanks for the feedback and sorry if i went too far into detail.

Could have been a flat piece of steel your front tire kicked up and caught your rear tire as it bounced. Without seeing a picture it is hard to say.

Reason i say your front tire kicked up something, I drive semi trucks and I tend to lose tires on the rear drive axle more often, because the front drive axle will run over things & kick them up to just the right angle to catch on the rear. The cars front can flip up things and they bounce till the rear catches it just right sometimes.

Just like today, i got a huge bolt in my rear drive because the front flipped it up and was at the right angle when the rear tire caught it and impaled the tread!

Both was 5in long, 3/4 shaft.
