Swap back to stock. No aftermarket intakes are carb compliant at this time and none currently in market probably ever will be. They lack the carbon filter pad

It only takes about 10 min to swap

there's no real best. you get whichever one looks the coolest for you. They will all perform basically the same.

Keep the stock stored somewhere and swap in when needed (5 years or so if you purchased your car in california).

No. He's looking for a CARB compliant intake for use in CA. The GM CAI is not CARB certified.

OP I am in CA as well and just plan on doing a K&N or Green filter swap, keeping the stock intake box until I go FI.

I'm sure I'll feel dumb for asking when I hear the answer, but what's FI?

The K&N systems are 50 state legal. Now if they are any good is another story.

Actually they are not, in order to be used in CA the product has to also pass the CARB certification as well and carry a CARB # on the part. The K&N systems don't meet this as well. The only thing that would work is the K&N drop in filter that goes into the OE airbox.

It even says on K&N site that it isn't legal in CA.

Doh I stand corrected. I looked at their site and saw "others were 50 state legal" but then reread it and it said NOT for CA.

the only thing you can do currently that is CARB compliant is the K&N drop-in filters.

Because our intakes were built with the stupid carbon pad that last gen's air boxes had, CARB testing will require this carbon pad to be in any aftermarket solutions made. Since none of the current offerings include this pad, they will all almost certainly not ever be compliant. Even the GM ones.

So if you're looking for CARB compliant, you'll have to wait until someone bothers to build one. However, i would not hold your breath. In the mean-time, swap when needed. It's not a big deal.

Now for us who plan on going forced induction, that will be "fun" come inspection day.

FYI there are CARB approved FI systems. Magnacharger and Edelbrock are a couple.

Unfortunately, not for the V6, which understandably is not the OP's engine. I should have specified.
