Yeah it's unfortunate he babbled for so long, but here's what happened:
His build was very similar to mine except he had added meth for cooling, which I think gave him a false sense of security. He was only making around 620rwhp with 10lbs of boost, which I found surprising. The engine blew during a dyno pull and he shows a box of destroyed parts that appear to be what's left of a piston. He's right that you take your chances when you attempt to double the power output of the LT1, but he blames it on the engine. It may be that whole ring gap thing ProCharger posted about where they're too tight, I don't know. I know that without going completely forged and addressing that, you're taking your chances and each engine is different. He doesn't blame the tuner, but I just don't understand why his power output was so low with that much boost. Regardless he's going to end up with a better motor when this is all over.

Part of it might be that I think he lives at a higher altitude out west (Utah - maybe as I think his shop is JDP and they are out there). I know that higher altitude affects NA motors more than boosted but?

Definitely going for drop in forged pistons before I try to push much more power put of my car then, not worth the risk for me. I know it's not common but knowing my luck if I go with a smaller pulley I'll blow my motor and this car is my daily!

I expect that stock parts should be OK for 900-1k flywheel HP - without making any mistakes, one little rattle or over-spin it and it's all done.

It effects turbo's a whole lot less because they produce boost based on manifold pressure, so if it's say 15psi at sea level, and you go up to 5000ft which has a about a 2psi atmospheric pressure drop, you should be producing 13psi in the manifold, but the turbo automatically compensates by spinning faster because all it knows it that it has to create 15psi in the manifold. A supercharger speed is fixed by a pulley, if you had a magic wand and changed the pulley size according to elevation, it would react the same as a turbo. That being said, if the boost gauge says 10psi at high altitude, you should be making close to what you would make at 10psi at sea level. Usually with the same pulley you would make say 12psi at sea level and then 10psi at altitude. |

And you're still running stock LT1 pistons and rods?

I'm still stock as well. I was thinking about changing over but my car's been handling it all just fine. I can't even tell you how many dyno pulls it's made and it's been driven hard without any issues. I'm not sure if it's worth tearing it apart now to replace parts that aren't broken since you'd be doing the same work more or less if it does go.
