Stock 20in rim tire options

Can the stock 20in rear wheels accept a wider tire than the stock 285s our cars come with?

Yes, someone here has put 305s on the rear. But...why?

You will not gain much by putting on 9.5" more than 285

If you have the SS model, the stock rear tire is 275 not 285. With that said, the biggest tire that I will feel comfortable with is 285 on a 9.5" rim.

Anything bigger will have a slight bulge on the sidewall

This. I have a 285 with my BFG Comp2 A/S as it is my DD and used them for the crappy weather. No Issues.

Stuffing fat rubber on a wheel that is not wide enough pinches in the sidewall which could create handling issues.
A wider contact patch does not mean better handling. A little tire stretch is always better.
Stick with the 275 or 285 tops. If you have a desire to go wider consider new Wheels.
