D1 procharger overkill?

Local tuner here in Denver area is recommending D1 head unit due to altitude. I'm seeking 8 lbs of boost for ~600 ish to the wheels.

Thoughts?

Oh and 1600 bucks for install, 700 for tune and 2 dynos.

That's an expensive install! I did mine in 8 hrs. That comes out to $200/hr + tune. That's nuts! You can ship the car to me in Chicago and I'll do it just to kill time! You'd still be money ahead with the shipping to and from!

While the D1 might be overkill for now, once you want more boost you may need it just because of altitude.

I am by no means an expert, but I'm sure ProCharger will chime in tomorrow and give you a better idea....

That install tho.....

My thoughts on install should be about 1500 tuned....or less

a D1 spec'd for 8psi is going to have way too large of a pulley. You'll have hood to supercharger pulley clearance issues.

The reason he recommends d1 is in case you want to scale up. That being said; a p1x or p1sc even will give u that.

Some cite better midrange with a d1. I'm currently running a d1sc with 4.25 pulley. I make about 9-10psi at the very top, but spray meth. I layed down 630/587. The pulley bit my hood insulation. So based on that I'd say you'd be hitting metal if you shot for 8psi only on the d1

Also that tune price is inflated as fug.

Install price just depends on hourly. I wouldn't negotiate with a shop who tries to dry you out with their first offer. Every time you go lower, expect their "give a ****ometer" to drop a bit as well.

I'd get a few different opinions before pulling the trigger with this guy.

Thanks, I felt the same way about their willingness to do their best if I told them to take $500 off the labor.

So...an outfit who I think get's pretty good reviews here and elsewhere, RMCR does Vortech and the price is pretty good, so I may go with that.

I'm running a D1SC making about 8psi with a 4.5" pulley and I have not got any clearance issues from the setup.

Are you automatic or manual?

Is there a bite mark right where your pulley is in the hood insulation?

I think the manual's motor torques up higher during downshifts.

Likewise on the headunit, pulley size and clearance, but not on the boost pressure it is only making 5.8 psi at 5,085 ft elevation.

I see that you are at sea level. 2.2 less psi boost or 27.5% seems like too much change just for the elevation.

All tuners at elevation recommend using the D1, also Procharger does for higher elevations. It may not be because of the higher flow capacity, but because the impeller is larger and it may flow better at altitude in low and mid rpm's since there is less vaccum at the impeller's inlet.

I was just under 8psi, I forgot exactly how much, I'll find out again when I get another tune this summer. I really feel bad for you high altitude folks.

Mine is an A8 so that may be the case!

My install is going to cost me $1500 and 500 for tune . Wish I could get enough days off to do the install myself but life :(
