Gains with 95mm tb
So I’m going fbo on my 22 1le a10 soon. So far I have 2” headers with x pipe from speed engineering, e85 kit, roto fab intake and the lt2 manifold. I see a lot of ppl running lt4 95mm throttle body’s. What are the gains with the bigger throttle bodies? Thanks

I have a precise 95mm vs 87mm dyno delta comparison, although it's from back when the car still had the OEM shorty headers, so not 100% applicable to your setup, but the throttle body change in itself gained 16 rwhp and 4 lb-ft of torque.

the only thing i can offer on this: car had 2" headers, ported LT1 manifold, cut stock air box and ethanol
added an out of the box msd, rotofab & 95 mm tb. car gained 14 whp & 1 ft lb. hpt datalog timer comparisons showed minimal gain.

Please note this was with NO restrictor plate, because the opening of the MSD was already made for a 103. Be aware that arpad_m's commented hp was using a PD blower. Those flow more air, and therefore can gain more hp than your NA car would from a t/b change. One shop who tested an NA setup (MSD manifold) gained 8.42 hp with the unrestricted 95 (not ported) over the stock 87 t/b. |

I would not run the adapter. If you have a dremel open the bolt holes to fit the manifold. The adapter is worthless for power. It might take you 30 minutes of time to open the holes but its worth it. Its just to easy to modify the 95 to make it work.

so just the tb by itself and port the entrance of the intake to match the tb then? Or can I port the throttle adapter to be flush with the intake? Will that be just a waste of money to get the tb and the 95 to 87 adapter?

The adapter is necessary on the LT2.
The 95 will not bolt up directly. The bolt pattern is wider on the 95 than the 87. You *should* port the intake to match the adapter plate. Otherwise, you are putting a big hole on a small opening and wasting your time. I bolted on the adapter and used it as the guide to cut. Then I took RTV to seal the plate to the manifold. If done right, you'll destroy the stock seal area to get it out to 95. Also, the throat is quite thin as you go inside. I barely broke thru on the left side while cleaning up the opening into the plenum. Do not cut the adapter!!! You want all the bores as flush as possible to prevent eddies and turbulence that will reduce airflow. If the adapter fits the TB body perfectly, leave it and go straight to the intake.

Jut as an FYI- my car is N/A and I bought a out-of-box MSD w/out-of box 95mm TB combo. Bolted it on after adding a Borla 2nd cat delete X-pipe and keeping the factory NPP exhaust (which is nearly always on "Track" mode). I should also mention after a 6 months or more (without any problems), I decided it was a good time to throw on a tune as the EPA was in the process of coming down on companies like Bully Dog (or BDX), and limiting what they could manipulate in the ECU. The RDP Store and DynoSteve provided a nice BDX w/tune to meet my needs. I had a slight drop in MPG so I know I'm providing a bit more fuel for my jewel and it continued to run like a top.
The car loved it, I loved it. Never a hiccup or code. Then I learned about Soler and their 95-103 adaptor... they say a little knowledge is dangerous, but after 40+ years as a Resp. therapist I knew if you introduce a higher speed flow of gas (or fluid), in this case a 95mm opening into a 103mm orifice, into a area of lower pressure that introduces what's known as the Bernoulli's principle: you get a pressure drop that causes inclusion of surrounding air (kind've like an eddy just past a rock outcropping, if you've done any whitewater canoeing or kayaking). In short, I'm talking about turbulence. OK- I know I'm over thinking, but I threw on Soler's ported adaptor to match the MSD opening and the car's still happy as a clam, and so am I. Don't have any numbers to back it up, but my seat of the pants tells me it's all been good. Sorry for rambling! Last edited by Ventmaster; 05-13-2022 at 04:08 PM. |
