Engine starting an LT1 SS

I am a new owner of an SS 1LE and have noticed that when starting the engine, it cranks over much longer compared to my previous LS3 in my 5th generation Camaro. I am guessing on the order of a 2 to 3 seconds longer. The LS3 would always pop right of regardless of being cold or warm. I was curious if other SS 6th generation owners have noticed that difference or if this is something that needs checked out. The engineer in my is thinking that the engine is allowed to turn over a few times to feed oil before initiating the fuel injection and spark to reduce long term mechanical wear. Any other thoughts?

Normal- the Direct Inj pump takes that long to pressurize to 1800 psi.

As stated it's due to direct injection

Your previous LS3 didn't have "direct injection" either.

The fuel system on the LT1 runs at extremely high pressure compared to the LS series engines.

So, what your experiencing is normal as stated.

Here is an excellent thread started by Glen e - "New Owner: Things that are normal"

http://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=448826

It is a good read for all new Camaro owners.

Most engines are direct injected nowadays. My Hyundai fires right up with zero delay. So did the LT4 Z06's I've driven.

Thanks for all the replies. Just getting used to the differences form the 5th gen and don't even have it broke in yet. 1500 miles can't get here soon enough.

Your Hyundai has an electric fuel pump. Our cars have a mechanical fuel pump with direct injection. Thus when you crank it it needs 2 seconds or so to build pressure. Idk what Z06s your starting but the ones I've been in/drove had the same crank as mine in cold start.

Interesting read. There is a traditional fuel tank mounted pump plus another pump under the intake manifold that bumps the pressure up to about double or triple what fuel systems used to Run. Interesting. Thanks for that info!

http://media.chevrolet.com/media/us/...wertrains.html

That is the reason. Not the direct injection. The 3.6 in my colorado truck fires right up so guessing it uses only the tank mounted pump

Tri-lobe camshaft: The LT1’s camshaft features an all-new “tri-lobe” at the rear, which drives the engine-mounted direct injection high-pressure fuel pump. The cam’s specifications include 14mm/13.3mm (0.551/0.524-inch) intake/exhaust lift, 200/207-crank angle degrees intake/exhaust duration at 0.050-inch tappet lift and a 116.5-degree cam angle lobe separation.
New, cam-driven fuel pump: The direct injection system features a very-high-pressure fuel pump, which delivers up to 15Mpa (150 bar), which is fed by a conventional fuel-tank-mounted pump. It is mounted in the “valley” between cylinder heads – beneath the intake manifold – which ensures noise is muffled by the intake manifold and other insulation.
