2017 Auto Dimming side mirrors question

Was driving last night and noticed only my rear view and drivers side mirrors have the green dimming film on them...why wouldn't Chevy make the passenger side mirror dim as well? Or am I missing something? Only reason I noticed is because the passenger side mirrors was bright as hell from the cars behind me.

I thought I read somewhere that all mirrors have the automatic dimming feature..

My only guess is that the Mirror is further away from the Driver and at Nite (if it was tinted) The Driver would not be able to CLEARLY see a Car in the "Blind spot" That's ALL I have???

The following is the reasoning I've heard somewhere before:

The passenger rear view mirror is convex (causing the need for the "Objects are closer than they appear" labeling). And as a side effect of the convex shape, less light is reflected towards your eyes; especially if the light being reflected is more of a point-light like headlights. In short, this causes a natural dimming effect on your passenger rear view mirror and not on your other rear view mirrors which are flat.

From my own real-life observations, this explanation seems to hold true. Though, for some with more sensitive eyes, an active dimmer may be preferable on the passenger rear view mirror as well.

I've had numerous cars with auto dim mirrors, and driven many rentals with them, and none had it on the passenger side. Lots of different makes, this isn't unique to Chevy.

I read that Cadillac is going to have both outside mirrors dim, believe soon or I believe the CT6 already comes with them.

My last car had it on all the mirrors. It doesn't bother me but there's no reason why they couldn't put it on all the mirrors.

Good point you've brought up. My 2SS has auto dimming rear view and side mirrors. All this while I was under the assumption both side mirrors were auto dimming. I will keep an eye on the passenger side mirror on my next night drive.

It's a cost/benefit decision. Many cars only dim the driver side (not all so no need to list a number of cars that dim both). This is because a light in that mirror is far less blinding than one in the driver side mirror. The 5th gen and many cars are the same way. It's honestly one of those things thats pretty widely used as industry standard, and if they can save a few bucks on each of the hundreds of thousands of cars they make without much consumer backlash, they will.

You should watch the 50th anniversary mustang documentary. There is a great part where the one of the product supply managers on the design team is having a meltdown over a $.10 screw and how he explains it is when they are budgeting for making hundreds of thousands of these cars that starts to add up, 8 years later that's potentially millions of dollars spent in supply with no guarantee of high demand sales.

Basically, the short answer is it got cut somewhere along the design stage in order to fit something else we wanted, like the baffles in the exhaust etc. because they look at long term aggregate costs rather than individual car costs.
