Winter tires
Hi guys,
So I decided to drive the Camaro all year round in Michigan with winter tires. Just stop by discount tire and decided to go with blizzards WS80 225/55 R18 with appropriate rims. My questions is should I be at all concern with damaging the suspension as I am going from 20 to 18 inch rim. Total will be 1450 out the door for rims, tires, tpms, and labor. I guess it beats buying a winter car! Let me know what you think! Thank you |

yeah, you should be good to go for anything under 6".
maybe put 100lbs of sand in the truck if you need help to get moving from a stop if you're in a mtn/hilly region. |

What wheels did you go with? I'm buying next month probably from Discount Tire as I'm at $1800 with Tire Rack when you add shipping.

Oh and I was also told to remove the air deflectors from the front of the front tires.

I am also going to drive the Camaro year-round. Thankfully, for the larger snow-fall days I have a Subaru Forester that I normally let my Mom drive to pickup my daughter from school.
You shouldn't do any damage to the suspension, in fact you are probably causing a small percentage less wear and tear since you have more tire wall to deflect some impacts.

Lots of info about wheels here if you search. Many people are running 18s on SS--just need to make sure offset is appropriate. Stock 18x8.5 wheels on LT are +32 offset.

Just go on Tire Rack and pick the cheapest 18 inch wheels and winter tires. My setup was in fact the cheapest wheels (Sport Edition brand) and Michelin X-ice XI3...so a little more than the CHEAPEST set but I really like the Michelins. Total was $1,250 with shipping...no TPMS.

You don't run the TPMS through the winter? I guess you let tirerack balance them and you put them on yourself?
Because tirerack has this blurb "NHTSA's interpretation of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act prohibits service providers from installing aftermarket tires and wheels on your vehicle without working TPMS sensors."

I went with 245/50R-18 Bridgestone Blizzak WS80 XL for the tires ($725) and the 18" LT rims from eBay for $480. I picked up the sensors for about $140 for all four.

That written, I am going to get TPMS installed somewhere else. It's just that Tire Rack charges like $320 for the sensors and installation...we can all get the sensors for cheaper online.

Made some progress on the winter tire package yesterday. Found a set of 2016 18" wheels with center caps on EBay a little over a week ago but the seller didn't want to ship. After seeing it seeing his wheels were not selling I send a PM asking if he'd ship which he agreed to for an additional $100. I'm now the proud owner of of the wheels for $500 which I feel was a deal for the wheels and center caps.
Now the next challenge is TPMS. I've sound them on the camaro.com site for $30 each http://www.shopchevyparts.com/wheels...-92284995.html but they don't appear to have the nuts to mount them in the wheel. Does anyone have any experience with TPMS mounting and what else may be required? |
