Conflicted- M6 or A8?

Hey everyone. I have been preparing to get a '17 2SS for about 2 months now. Being partial to Manuals my intention was to get an M6. But after some issues locating one with the specs that I want, and being somewhat impatient not wanting to wait for one to be built, I am considering the A8 instead since there is much higher available stock of A8 2SS in my area. Also I have about a 140 round trip commute to work and can encounter serious traffic, which after thinking about it, would be easier to deal with having the Auto.

Just looking for some feedback from those who have been driving each style. While I love the M6, I really don't want to end up not enjoying it because I have a crappy commute, but I also don't want to feel like I'm settling for the A8 either.

I just upgraded from a gen5 1LE M6 to a 2016 2SS A8. I enjoy rowing my own gears but the new A8 is so good that I don't miss the M6 at all. You pretty much summed it up. With the type of driving you do the A8 is the more practical choice. If you told me it was just a weekend car and you loved to row then I would recommend you wait and get the M6 but a 140 miles a day in traffic, I think you are already answering your own question.

When I had a commute similar to yours, I had a BMW with an A8 and enjoyed the more relaxed drive in traffic.

Now I live 3 miles away from work and it's all back roads with almost no traffic, so I went for an M6.

So, I fully understand your thinking on this matter.

However, you might want to check this thread and listen to the opinion to many Camaro owners about their Auto/Manual choice. There's also someone that picked an M6 for long commutes / heavy traffic drives, mentioning that the Auto was stressing his right leg too much as compared to the left one, resulting in more pain...

I came from a 5th Gen manual to the 6th Gen auto and don't regret it at all.

The auto is fantastic and I have a similar commute with stop and go traffic plus when I get the itch, I just slip the auto shifter to the left to put it in manual mode and shift by pushing it up or down (not really a paddle fan so I appreciate that this option was added).

I went from always driving an automatic with no prior manual experience to just flat out buying my car with the M6. I'm on week 3 now and have been learning as I go. I'm loving every second of it. The shifter and clutch in this car are very easy to use which makes driving pretty smooth. Even on my commute home in the mornings from work with all this heavy NY traffic, I still don't regret it.

It really comes down to personal preference. The M6 and A8 are both nice and the car itself is awesome. Just really take the time to think and weigh out the pros and cons of both and pick the one you feel will make you the happiest, man. I feel like you can't go wrong with either

My last two were M6 and I thought I would never get an auto. I'll never get the M6 again after having this A8.

Came from a 2007 Supercharged Cobalt SS (only comes in manual) and a 2013 2LT Cruze 6 Speed Manual. Was going to get a manual Camaro, but my fiance' wanted an auto and she helped with the down payment so I obliged with the A8 and to be honest, I am LOVING it!! Nice and easy when driving around town and traffic, but when you want to get a little nuts, the paddles or competition shift mode, deliver!

Practical? Becuase traffic is annoying some times.
Don't ruin your driving experience to be practical.
Pick what you would enjoy most

Don't let your impatience lead to buyers remorse. I just picked up a 2SS Fiftieth Anniversary edition with M6, NPP and MRC (Nav was an added bonus). Many dealers had these but they all had a sunroof and could have had one right away. I asked my wife what she thought and she said don't do it. Also you loose the reverse Mohawk with a sunroof so my mind was made up. I had appointments to order one and was willing to wait the 8 weeks for a car I plan on having for the rest of my days. Then I searched on Edmunds and found exactly what I wanted Called the dealer and sealed the deal on the phone. Drove 4 hours to pick it up and am so happy I stuck to my guns.

Many configurations out there so make sure you get exactly what you want and don't settle or make up reasons for getting whatever is available. The worst thing is to second guess your choice every time you grab the shifter. I've been there

All of THIS.
Maiden Rush, did the second guessing with my 5th Gen, now I'm in a much better space. Welcome to the Fifty club.

This is one of my major things about the car that I want also. Why so many freaking sun roofs? It totally eliminates the beautiful roofline.

Well, if the the OP sits in 30-60 minutes of heavy traffic everyday that will pretty much ruin the driving experience right there. The M6 shines when you can wind out the gears and you have some open road to do so not when you have to 1000 reps of engaging 1st gear each morning in stop and go traffic.

I was in a similar situation with my gen5 1LE. I loved driving the manual but honestly every time I saw a bunch of traffic ahead I would cringe as I knew I had 45 minutes or so of pure joy as I roll out of first, short shift to 2nd and back to neutral. Rinse, repeat, rinse repeat. I actually started wondering how long it would take to wear out the clutch with this type of driving.

I was willing to put up with the annoyances with the M6 while in traffic until I test drove the A8. It shifts fast and firm and realistically makes for a better daily driver for the type of driving I deal with.

As others have said, definitely do not settle. Especially when spending this kind of money. I had the opportunity to buy a C7 at a significant discount. The only problem was it was equipped with the 8A. It was such a good deal, i almost bought it. However, after talking with the wife and thinking it through I felt I would regret it. So I ordered one instead. This wait is tough, but I know it will be worth it. It was also nice to build it exactly how I wanted it.
