Dealer is replacing my entire exhaust!

So I got my car back after my dealer installed a brand new differential due to the groaning noise on cold operation when turning and accelerating from a stop (multiple oil changes didn't fix the issue, although the third change did make it not as bad). As soon as I left the dealership with the new differential, I started hearing a metallic clanging from the trunk area whenever I would go over a bump.

On the way home, I pulled over and looked in the trunk, pulling up the trunk mat and seeing if I could find anything metal that was banging around down in there. Nothing was down there so I couldn't figure it out. I drove home, backed the car up on ramps, and checked out everything underneath the back of the car real good. Nothing was loose. So I was clueless.

The dealer told me to bring it in and they would look at it. They said it was probably something loose that they didn't tighten completely. After the car being at the dealer for five hours, they called me and told me that they were ordering me a brand-new exhaust system. They heard the noise, but it took them forever to pinpoint it. They felt that it was coming from somewhere in the exhaust system, but they were not sure exactly where from. I would imagine it is towards the back where the dual mode exhaust hardware is. Just my guess. But now they have put me in a loaner Silverado for the next week while my car sits up there and waits for a new exhaust. They said it should be there hopefully next Thursday.

Wow.

Here's a trunk video as I went over some bumps on the little road behind my work, with what the sound/rattle sounds like:

My whole exhaust was replaced bc of the passenger side npp valve rattle. Didn't help in the end but yours sounds like something different

Same here, complete exhaust replaced for a different reason (NPP squeak).

Pretty sure the groaning rear end was even an issue in the gen 5.

So funny update......

The dealer called me today to tell me that while they were taking my old exhaust off to get it ready for the new exhaust they ordered, they found two bolts that were not torqued all the way and they were causing the rattling. They tightened them up and now supposedly the rattle is gone. Going to pick it up after work.

That's crazy they didn't find that after 5 hours of inspecting a few days back, lol.

Hopefully they replaced the bolts and inspected the holes they were in for excessive wear from being loose . Good luck

Yeah, I get the differential noise really bad too. I brought this up to my dealer withings 72 hours of ownership. They said it was completely normal after looking at it....

This is the crap that keeps me from letting a dealership touch my car unless it is absolutely something I'm not equipped to do myself.

I took mine to the dealer today for the same groaning noise and they said they were told by the tech line it was normal operation?

Hi ,

I was just wondering if you solved the metallic thumping sound ? I have owned my 2017 2SS (in the UK) for about a week and today heard what I thought sounded like something hitting metal on the passenger side to the rear as I went over bumps.

Cheers
