2015 Mustang IRS observation
I want to mention that based on the limited photos of the 2015 mule IRS, it is obvious that the rear springs AND the shocks seem to be mounting in the exact same coordinate where the solid axle had them mounted.
It is becoming evident to me, that they might be building 2015 mustangs with IRS and SOLID axle mustangs on the same assembly line. To me this is very possible since chances are the IRS won't be advisable for 650hp coming from a GT500. Also, the rumor is the chassis is STILL going to be the S197 chassis they have been using right now, but just with upgrades. (this explains why the 2013 mustang body seems to fit easily with no issues on the mule they are driving around.) To me it makes sense to have the option for a SOLID axle. I am even wondering if they plan to put a solid axle in the 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder mustangs. And I would assume GT500 owners going to a drag strip want the solid axle. http://www.drivingenthusiast.net/sec-blog/?p=13173 |

A 5.0 with an IRS will be pretty tough around the bends.

An IRS will benefit the Mustang in the turns but it also adds a significant amount of weight and prob has more parasitic loss. Just something to consider.

They've done "Both" types of axles before...except back then it wasn't exactly "plug and play"....If the mounting points are the same, my first inclination is to assume the chassis would be the same (or at least the hard-points), which could lend credence to the rumor they're going to continue using the S197...
![]() Will be interesting to see what the cook up. They promised something "drastically different" if memory serves. Can't wait to see what that is. |

Sounds like a damn good idea to me, personally I'd want IRS, just because I'm going to push her hard into the turns also and my car will be more of a street car.
I agree, hopefully it won't be another Taurus haha |

Are you drawing that conclusion based on the OPs picture, or something more recent?

I'm drawing a conclusion based on the OP's picture compared to the Rear End of the M3. There are some very noticeable similarities in the Spring and Damper location. Regardless, more information will be available when they decide the time is right. I'm crazy excited for the next gen cars.
