End of production thoughts
I was just reading that Toyota has invested in some upgrades for the 2024 Lexus RC350 sports coupe and it got me thinking……
Toyota is the world king of efficiency. They will not so much as use a screw if it is not required and can still maintain quality and reliability. They’re also the kings of fuel efficiency as well as making rather boring, bland, milk toast cars. They make mostly appliances for people who do not care about cars. They do not sell a whole lot of RC’s. But I got to thinking, they’re still building the RC350. And investing in future upgrades. It’s not a hybrid. It probably gets the worst fuel economy of the entire Toyota/Lexus portfolio with the exception of their trucks and SUVs. It actually still comes with a CD player. It’s a coupe with a back seat even tighter than our 6th gens. Again, Toyota is still building it and has no immediate plans to stop. So what got me thinking, is, well….. every reason GM and other people have cited to end Camaro production - it’s fuel economy, cramped rear seat, relatively low tech, it’s a coupe, doesn’t have good fuel economy, low sales (even though it sells more than the RC)….. and yet Toyota still builds what is essentially their version of the Camaro. I just have to wonder then, how and why does Toyota still make their customers happy while GM alienates theirs?

Toyota has a sustainable and straightforward vision, GM does not.

If I understand, there were numerous ordered cars that never got built. Why the rush to stop building 24s? Not market driven if there were unfilled orders (never mind dealers wanting to stock to gradually sell off). Doesn't seem like sound business to leave money on the table by not filling orders.

Rc300(base model) starts at 46k. Camaro base price is 30k. Lots of profit in that 16k.

I doubt many base LTs with no options were built. When the 6th Gen came out you could supposedly get one for $23k, an LS trim with the turbo 4.

The RC350 is desirable to me except for no manual transmission.I got my 21 Camaro v6 manual new for 29k final price, only option rs package. It is the favorite car I have ever owned and I'm 61. Like a lot of owners I'm sad to see it end. I have only owned Japanese and US vehicles.

It's not that a car company can't keep a low-production model around, it's that GM chooses not to. They have cars like the Corvette which eat up the budget for a high-cost, low-production vehicle, and there has been a lot of non-ignorable overlap between the two models in the past. And the Corvette will die, too. The C8 cost the farm to develop, and where do you go from here with a mid-engined V8 2-seater when those lines fail to age well? Meanwhile, Ford continues to bet on their own horse, and they're winning...
I've been a Camaro enthusiast since I was a little kid, in fact I was born the same year the third gen was released. I come from a line of muscle-car enthusiasts. I can say this with certainty: GM has had a stick up its ass for a solid eon, now. GM is an extremely conservative company and has produced a lot of cars designed on a spreadsheet. Every now and then they lighten up, have a little fun, and allow something good to come through, like the 6th gen. Or who let a mid-engined Corvette out of the bag, who knows. The only thing is certain: GM will kill every good thing it produces. |

100% on the above post
GM died when the Fed Mafia took over. GM was king from 1955- 1970 I'm old enough to remember when the SS 396 Chevelle's were new They were everywhere Chevy Pontiac Olds Buick all had something to offer with 4 Speeds |

Nothing to do with Fed anything. Ford builds arguably good cars/trucks and has a knack for following the market better than GM does. A lot of car companies do. GM holds on to its boomer, out-of-touch roots like no other car company.
It's almost like GM is a financial company and they build cars as a sideshow. |

It’s this. When you build a low production car the base price has to be high to make up for it. The c8 for example now starts at 70k for a base 1LT. Never thought I’d see that day (at least so soon). The c7 z06 started at 76k and that car came out only 9 years ago.

Relatively new GM customer, I was able to draw all of these same conclusions rather quickly. Unfortunately it reminds me very much of how the union company I work for chooses to run its business. Inevitably into the ground. I’m not really anti-union or anything. I just get to see first hand the advantages and disadvantages that come along with it. All of this being said ford and dodge seem to make it work so it does seem to be an exclusively GM issue.
