Unhappy Engine might be toast

So about a month back I started a thread concerning smoke coming out of my exhaust at a cold start after my 1500 mile oil change. Fast forward a month and 2 service visits about it later to today and the dealer had me come back in to replace the oil as they put a little too much in last oil change. They hoped this would resolve the smoking issue.

Picking up my car I noticed on the inventory sheet they had 10.5 quarts of oil listed. I raised this as odd to my service advisor as the V6 engines only hold 5.5 quarts. He seemed to disagree with me and brought the mechanic that replaced my oil out to my car and pulled my manual. The mechanic insisted he put 10 in and pointed to a 10.74 quart number, which to my astonishment didn't even realize he was looking at the coolant volume table. They then pulled the dip stick to check the level and showed me saying the oil level looked fine. Tired of arguing and not believing there was any way he fit 10 quarts in, I took their word.

Now 7 hours later on the way home from work on the highway, my transmission is hesitating to shift and my RPMs are getting high, and then a split second later my car is surrounded in a thick cloud of black smoke with my check engine light flashing. I've called my service advisor who has a loaner waiting and I'm on the side of the highway waiting for Chevy Roadside to pick me and my car up. I feel bad to a certain extent as the service advisor is a great guy, however I'm worried my engine may be done for.

wow. 10 quarts in a v6? that's a new one. Usually it's them not being able to read the manual the other way around for the V8 people.

That engine is gonna be a mess with oil all over places it shouldn't be in.

Now would be a good time to upgrade to the 10 quart Camaro (SS). So they don't screw up again. Hope you get it all resolved.

Wow! I'm trying to put this together.
It sounds like he may have messed with your transmission fluid!
If he overfilled the oil, you would get windage problems with the crank foaming up the oil causing you to burn oil. It might also cause some power loss, since the crank is turning in a thick bath of oil.
I can't make the connection of overfilled oil in the crankcase to automatic transmission clutch packs slipping.
I suspect mega-stupidity at play here!

Holy moly dude that stinks! I'd imagine that you will have quite a mess. I also can't see the connection between too much oil and an auto trans not functioning unless the engine speed sensor was somehow giving wired readings and the trans was freaked out..

Or the dummy put motor oil in the trans... DAAANG!

Might want to let service look at it first.

3 grown men can't read a dipstick? Possible, but not probable.

Black smoke is not indicative of an over-filled crankcase.

This same car had blown headgaskets (not) Checked out fine. http://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=485132

Let service check it.

If it was over-filled that much, it's done.

Too bad you had the problem.

So many systems, and checks would have to fail at the dealership for this to happen. Not to mention, the amount of people that also failed at the same time!!!
I mean....
First , the lube technician failed to even recognize what engine he was working on...WOW...

Then , when he took his work order into the parts department to get his filter, and let them know how much oil to bill to the work order......They also , somehow failed to recognize that the quantity of oil was NOT correct......

THEN..... When the work order was completed by the service advisor.....Somehow, he doesn't realize the price is WAY too high for that engines oil change...

Not to mention the cashier, who usually has your history displayed on her screen, including previous oil changes.... And she also doesn't notice a discrepancy...

Probably time to find a new dealership :(
Well most of those employees mentioned are the lowest when it comes to pay and experience at the dealership.

That being said I agree find a new dealership after this mess is worked out.

Then they would likely underfill his SS with 5 quarts thiking it was a V6 and score a bearing.

If your engine is toast, put jam on it.

Go back to the dealer. If they can't fix it, start a lemon law complaint.

Agree, but in fairness, most of the horror stories I encounter at dealers have to do with OWNERS not taking care of their cars.
This story, though, does sound like a dealer problem.
Tchowe, we need follow-up!

Actually there are, I've owned Porsche's with smaller motors that take more.

Such a bummer when a dealer screws up like this. If you don't get satisfaction from the service department I would suggest starting to complain up the food chain.
