Question Speed limit on DIC - Nav required?

Hello all,

First post here. I'll be buying a new (2018) SS early next summer, doing my research and planning now. I've read a ton of threads on here, but there's one thing I'm still not 100% sure on.

For the speed limit to be displayed on the digital dash (DIC?) and on the HUD (on 2SS) is the Nav option required? I've read so many threads with conflicting information it's hard to get a definitive answer.

I don't really want the Nav (seems redundant with CarPlay) but I do really want the speed limit display, so I'll get the Nav if necessary, but only if necessary.

My 1LE does not have NAV. It displays the speed on the Hud and DIC.

Just a note, since your in Canada, the speed limit display seems to only work on major highways. I have navigation and the speed limit is useless everywhere except major roads. I thought it would be a nice feature as well as a lot of roads in towns and cities won't tell you the limit until its too late but it never works until I get onto the 401. I'm still left guessing if the street I'm on is a 50 or a 60.

I would avoid navigation unless GM has an update for this. I imagine Mexico is the same.

Is that feature only for US and Canada?

Speed limit, not speed.

I'm not sure. Scroll through your DIC, past your tire pressures and other information and eventually it should display a speed limit for the road you are on. The icon is road speed sign with a number on it to associate the current speed limit of the road. If there's no number it will just display 3 lines (basically meaning the computer was unable to find the speed limit).

The manual states it pulls the information from a roadway database through the car's navigation. Page 126, under Speed Limit in the DIC Info section. However Like I stated above, It seems the database is incomplete outside the United states as I only get the speed limit when on major roads, which is kind of pointless as I know what the speed limit of the highway is.

Oh, that's good to know, but disappointing. Certainly not gonna pay the extra for it if it's not even gonna work properly.

I'm actually curious about this now if there's an update to the Nav to fix this. My car was an early 2016 model and maybe the Nav database has been updated for the 2018s. Best thing to do would be to take a 2018 with Nav for a test drive and scroll through the DIC to see if you can get speed limits just cruising around town.

Hahaha yeeeah, I'd love to, but nobody here is letting them off the lot. It's kind of ridiculous.
Through some miscommunication at one dealership I did manage to get a 5 min "test drive" in one of them, but was busy learning the corners and making sure I didn't hit anything, had no chance to check out anything.

We don't have it. Our systems normally works with a cam close the rain sensor in the center mirror. It reads the road signs and the max speed and other pop up in you nav display and HUD.

So the option is completely removed from your DIC? Do Euro spec Camaro's get the option for Navigation? If the European standard is that it must use a sensor on the mirror to read the signs then I can see why GM wouldn't go through the trouble of adding that feature for European deliveries. However if its not against standards, I don't see why they couldn't also have a European roadmap database that the Navigation unit could access unless its cost prohibitive having a European roadmap database for the few cars they sell.

As a side note its odd that the way you do it over there is to have a camera scan the sign. Lets say you got off a highway where the limit is 100 and now the road is a 60, but doesn't display a 60 until further ahead. Does the vehicle continue displaying 100 until it see's the 60?

I like the way the Camaro does it, minus the fact Canada's database is not updated so it doesn't work properly, it tells you the speed limit as soon as you get onto a new road instead of waiting until you come across the speed limit sign.

I've always wondered about the need for this feature... Aren't you supposed to be paying attention to the speed limit signs regardless as they're subject to change at a moment's notice?

Well since you are looking to buy next summer, this shouldn't be the case come Spring as those 18's will now be a few months old and the dealers will need to move them. It was very easy for me to get test drives from my dealers when I was looking around July last year as the 16's they had on the lot were a few months old. As long as I set up an appointment they had no issues letting a 24 year old take out the car alone.

So it might be a pain now, but it shouldn't be a problem to wait until April to take one out for a test drive to see if it works before you buy in the summer.
