For the record, the quickest time we’ve ever seen around the figure eight is 22.2 seconds, put down by both the Porsche 918 Spyder and the Lamborghini Huracán Performante. Meaning the Camaro 1LE is within spitting distance. When I asked our handling guru Kim Reynolds what he thought about the two cars after lapping them, he looked first to the Camaro then disparagingly glanced at the Mustang and said, “There’s about 4,000 years of evolution separating the two.”

This is all you need to know about the comparison summed up in one quote.

This is the one that resonates with me, and one of the main reasons I bought mine:

Chevy has done the near impossible, transcended the genre, and turned a once provincial pony car into an honest to goodness world-class sports car.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand here comes the Ford Fanboys...........

but, but..........it wasn't the optioned out Mustang. Wasn't a fair fight. blah blah blah. Let me guess, they want the GT350? They'd still lose.

I would absolutely love to see this comparison, but Ford would never send one. They know the cars are too close and a loss could tarnish the reputation of a legend.

Yep, exactly. But, who cares. The fanboys would still flock to the dealerships to pay for them plus ADM.

Ok, good article and again reinforces my choice in buying the 1LE Camaro, but it appears as though the author made some pretty simple mistakes.

He indicated that their car came with optional recaros... uh, recaros are standard with the 1LE. He also failed to mention that the 1LE wheels are forged but mentioned that the PP1 package gets you aluminum wheels. Yeah, not forged.

At first it looked like he was really trying not to embarrass the mustang.

Would have been even better to list everything you get with the 1LE on top of approaching super car handling like brembos front and rear (front only for the ford), forged wheels, recaros, suede, flat bottom steering wheel, short throw shifter, and the other stuff mentioned all for less money than the overpriced Mustang. That would even more clearly illustrate what an ultimate performance bargain the 1LE Camaro is.

Regarding the interior of the Mustang being 2 grand nicer? I disagree. I've sat in a 2018 Mustang and it isn't unless you opt for the nearly 2 grand more expensive premium plus package and even then, it's just a bunch of Ford eather on everything. You can now get a suede and carbon package in the mustang but it too is extra. I still like the simplicity of the Camaro interior and love the included Suede and leather combo.

It almost seemed like the author was in pain having to write that the Camaro destroyed the Mustang but just couldn't deny the test data.

I'll say it again, the Camaro 1LE is simply amazing especially considering the price.

I never thought that I would ever have a chance to feel what it's like to drive a super car, but I guess I do thanks to this car!

They kinda did during the 10 best driver car shootout. The GT350 came in second next to the McLaren. Other mags have tested them too and the Ford won over the 1LE because it sounded better despite equal lap times.

That was an R version. There have been basically no actual instrumented tests done between standard 350 and 1LE.

They even did a Head 2 Head comparing the old Z28 with the GT350R when they could have easily picked the GT350 instead.

Oh, not too different are they besides no back seats, some carbon and a few aero add ons?

No a/c, much lighter than the GT350, carbon fibre wheels, suspension, much bigger fatter cup 2 tires, aero, lowered etc etc. The "R" is a much different car.

It really seems like Motortrend is trying not to hurt the feelings of the Ford camp. Cowboy science was never a thing up until they pulled it out of their ass for this comparison. I'm guessing there's some sort of a service level agreement where they can't completely shit on a vehicle in comparisons. The GY tires did great and they tried to downplay it so hard by saying you can't do burn outs on it. Let's also throw a track focused meaty car on a long runaway for kicks, they said themselves it's at a disadvantage in the article. Regardless I'm glad they gave the 1LE the credit it deserved at the end eventually.
