Lol damn kids

My son has a 2016 ss2 and is away at college. So he either got a Crack in the oil pan or oil pump. All in all he blew it up. So looking into a replacement engine. Im assuming its a 6.2 liter lt1 v8. Now im not a huge car guy but should I go with a rebuilt from somewhere or new crate one? Ill take any and all suggestions and opinions. On who to order from looking to spend about 8000.00 on engine. Also what parts or kits besides the gaskets will I be needing to get for the installer? Thanks everyone

I’d search for a junkyard that has one to pull out.

There should be plenty of good salvage engines out there. I bought one on ebay once. Only had a few thousand miles on it. Just be sure the dealer is reputable and has a good history.

8K is on the low end for a R&R 6.2 (especially with all the small nickel and dime costs and tooling) in a 6th Gen Camaro. Will you be doing all the work yourself or paying someone to do it? I highly recommend doing a cam/valvetrain and tune while you're in there as well. This will help prevent future lifter/cam failures/issues in the future.

my buddy has pullout LT1's
they are reasonable, just call your insurance guy, ask where the nearest wrecked car auction is, then call them & ask who buys camaros.

COPart & LKQ should have all have Camaro in stock in your area.

I did a "new rebuild with upgraded parts" on my last $5k mustang. (99 GT A4)
i spent $9k in parts making it all work (like I put in a Cam, which required a new $500 torque converter, which required pulling the tranny.
so now, I have $14k in a $5k mustang.

I could have bought a used Crown Vic motor around $1500 & just slapped it in

i would buy a used motor, you can prolly do the swap yourself, exp if your motor comes with the oil pan & valve covers, which most do. it's straight forward plug & play, just take pictures, and get ZIP LOC bags you can write on.

I had two dozen zip loc bags, and I only lost one Bolt.

I would tie wrap the bags to the item (sway bar, intake, water pump) to keep it organized.

Junk the car and buy another

8 grand for an engine on a 10 year old car? I'd start looking for a good used Camaro before investing 8000 in a car that's not worth 8000.

A 2016 2SS is still worth $23-25K even at 75,000 miles.

Find a garage and park it there for a really long time- years and years. Drain the tank and disconnect the battery. Buy a decent fabric cover.
When your son is finished with college, making a living and married with kids, he'll get the itch someday to complete the car he once drove (and recklessly damaged) in his youth. And. he'll learn a valuable life lesson.
In the meantime, let him take public transportation. If not, buy him a clunker with that 8K.
I might sound harsh, but at my advanced age and 35-year career working with youth, I can assure you that he'll thank you someday.
