Great question... I plan to test this on the SS fascia later this year. Stay tuned.

"The LT4 is built with a pressure relief bypass valve in the oil filter, so if you have a pressure drop due to hose size, the oil will not get filtered and will bypass".

Does this mean that with a sandwich plate as the means to route oil to the oil cooler that the oil may not divert?

Why use a sandwich plate when removing the factory oil cooler gives you direct pump passage that is unrestricted? The oil filter boss is designed with both a filter bypass, meaning your oil goes through the block with zero filtration and the barbell in the oil filter passage also bypasses up to 500 microns of oil with a greater than .020" gap. If you are using the filter as the ports for your oil cooler, you are missing some of the oil and any pressure drop in your cooler/lines/routing could cause the filter to bypass if you are using one. It is much better to use the main port of flow and add a secondary filter/screen like those offered by Improved or the new SeeThruFilter designs.

One of the #1 killers of these engines is the DOD valvetrain whether active or not, is still there haunting you... a fine particle of metal getting into those lifters and the engine is TOAST!!

Also note the factory oil filter has a 22psi bypass built into it... so, the oil filter by-pass pressure setting refers to the pressure drop across the filter.

Let me explain it this way... if the oil pressure entering the filter is 80 psi and the pressure exiting the oil filter after you've installed -8 or -10 lines, an oil cooler and some turns in the system... your oil filter exit pressure is 60 psi, the pressure drop across the oil filter is 22psi, the filter is going to bypass. The UPF64R bumps this pressure to 35psi, but you could be restricting oil from the engine at that point.

The key here is filtering oil so metal particles do not ruin your track day and they can be found in the filter, so when you cut it open... there is traceability of your engine's condition BEFORE a catastrophic failure ruins your month. It is for these reasons most dedicated racing vehicles use a dual filter mount to not have the pressure drops associated with filtration of the oil. It is also why Improved Racing and others make their oil cooler bypass, so we can leave the filter to do filter things.
