Battery current sensor and Audio amps
Hey all noticed the battery current sensor (on negqative cable near battery) and will soon be adding Subs and amp to my 2016 camaro. Just have them around and dont want them sitting around for nothing. Do you think I should run my Amp ground through it so the heavy power draw is seen by the computer and up the alternator output or is that not able to work like i wish.
Or has anyone here allready thought of this, or am i looking at the wrong sensor or its purpose? Its the donut sensor on negative battery cable.. If that is not what it is sorry... |

I forget the exact details of this system off the top of my head, and my research has been focused on my 2023, so there are likely differences with a 2016.
I get my electrical info from ACDelcoTDS website and buy a 3-day subscription. There you get full dealer-level access to service manuals, schematics, system descriptions, etc. I'll see what the 2023 uses that sensor for and report back. In other vehicles (Honda) I would trick the ECM/PCM into thinking there was a load at all times by changing the voltage drop caused by the current sensor/shunt (in Honda it was the ELD).

Attached to this post is the Charging System Description, it explains how the charging system takes all of the various information into consideration, including the battery current sensor.

Every load is just connected to the chassis of the vehicle. Simply grounding amps to the chassis will result in load seen by the battery. But that alone won't fully engage the alternator output since it varies quite wildly and total load isn't one of the "triggers".
Simply put, the alternator output will vary wildly, as noted above. Keeping the alternator voltage above 13.9VDC can be accomplished by using the wipers, keeping the headlights on, or inducing a "current sensor malfunction", the latter of which is not described further. I don't know if that means an open circuit or short circuit will result in a "malfunction". I suppose someone could just unplug the sensors wires to see what happens. I imagine it will throw a code. https://www.hallsensorchip.com/news/...effect-sensor/ https://www.allegromicro.com/ja-jp/i...urrent-sensing

You could interrupt existing ground cable behind the donut and create a ground terminal block to tap into. But sounds like more work. I'll have to look into how that sensor works, as it's DC. EDIT: basic differences between dc and ac sensing: https://www.nktechnologies.com/engin...ensing-theory/ little youtube demo: Last edited by ctrlz; 05-01-2024 at 08:28 AM. |

Thank you for the information I appreciate the willingness to answer and it gives me some direction on how to proceed. I did not have the amp ran through it, but it is right beside it so i can just unbolt it and run it through and see if it does anything.. Again thanks a bunch.
Just a thought would it not make sense for the car to keep the battery at 13 or higher like older systems to improve performance. I dont remember the equation but does it not exponentially boost ignition spark and coil recovery with even just a little more volts running through the system? |

Interesting read. Several years ago I saw posts here recommending putting an extra ground from the battery terminal to some place in the trunk. Would this also bypass the current sensor and also send bad info? Is there a way to ground and still be using the sensor?
