The mounting plate itself isn't much worry, but you're right that the license plate will definitely sit a bit below the rest of the car, AND it sticks a bit further out in front. So approach angles get tweaked a bit.
I pretty much never have mine installed, so I've never had a problem w/ scraping anything. I could see where some situations could make it more difficult.
