Uh, have you ever tried that? I don't think that most pump hoses are long enough to comfortably do what you're suggesting.
My Malibu has the fuel door on the right, and it's no big deal to simply drive up to the pump so that it's on the right side of the car. I've never had any sort of problem with other cars etc. on my left. Believe me, fueling on the right presents no difficulties whatsoever.
While it seems like most (all?) Japanese cars have fuel doors on the left, many European cars (BMWs, I know for sure) have the fuel doors on the right, so the new Camaro will hardly be unique in this respect.
