My Hyundai Tiburon is 10 years old and I've been driving with either my hands on top or at 3 and 9 o'clock, not a single damage on the leather. Only the plastics around that have lost their paint.
I'd say it should be covered under warranty but I doubt they will cover it since it can really fall into the "normal" wear. Even thought it is not normal, they could consider that the use was abusive and that it wasn't a manufacturer issue.
Stupid question for the OP... Are you wearing a wedding ring? I guess that would be the type of damage done by a ring if driven by the left hand on top of the wheel..
