The mind blower for me is that, with all the hooplah over CAFE standards and improving fuel economy over the years, the 4th gen F-bodies and pretty much every 4th-5th gen Corvette with the LS 350 and 4 speed automatic routinely got 30+ mpg on the highway. That's kind of hard to do with our 6th gens, my highway best has been 27.
The 6th gens might have twice (or more) as many gears but I'm not sure if the ratios are the same. I'm thinking there was a pretty tall final drive ratio on the older cars.
