Fully agree, I have had many cars do this

I have had 50 cars in my life and due to this same kind of issue, I learned to adjust where I hold the wheel. If you use the same spot all the time, on just about any material its going to wear, fade, leave a mark.

Had two wheels replaced in various cars for just this reason, now I am more careful. Just go rid of a Jeep with under 12,000 miles on it and it was showed wear spots at 9 and 2 positions.

Then you've been lucky for years because its very common for steering wheels to wear and or burnish from continuous hand contact.
