I just can't stand it bare-handed. And I've already compared the two wheels with gloves on and the leather wheel still has good grip, like the perfect amount. So I just don't see where the Alcantara is better, except for differentiating the 1LE and Zl1 from the lower trim models. It feels cheap like something you'd pick up at a discount fabric store. It seems like a good material for somewhere you don't touch like a headliner or dash piece, but on a wheel and shift knob its an epic fail. Honestly I think its just a trendy thing they started putting in luxury cars because it was cheap and they could convince people it was expensive by putting it in special "packages" and now that practice has trickled down into other niches like performance cars. Seems like many people aren't drinking the kool-aid though:

I got my leather stuff from Wild Hammer Motorsports
$275 for the leather wheel
$135 for the leather shift knob and boot

The swap can be done in your garage if you have the tools, in a couple hours. There is a youtube video by LethalCamaro that shows you how to do it.
Getting the airbag out is actually pretty easy. There are two connectors with a couple mini tabs that need to be simultaneously lifted in order to disconnect them. I had to use two very small screw drivers to do it, and once I found the proper way to do it, it was simple.
