The 2016 HMI (Human Machine Interface Module) is what powers the MyLink system and is different than the 2017-2019+ HMI units.

The 2016 HMI is slower and has less memory compared to the other year HMI units. As well as the 2016 HMI can't take advantage of the GM AppShop.

The 2017-2018 HMI units have a slightly faster processor and more memory, allowing them access to the GM AppShop to add a few more functions to the vehicle. The 2017-2018 MyLink is able to update those Apps, not the MyLink software, via WiFi/OnStar Data connection.

The 2019+ HMI units are setup with the Infotainment3 system which allows what the 2017-2018 could do plus a lot more, including OTA updates to the MyLink system.

The only way that I am aware of (other than custom programming options via certain shops/vendors) to update the MyLink software on the 2016-2018 units is to take it into a dealership and have them update it.
Sounds like I'll be making a trip to a dealer. I'm still wondering why it gives me an error everytime I put in a USB stick.
