Some people feel the AFM contributed to the shudder in the A8. I read one mechanic who said he found, especially in the 5.3, that the disabled cylinders don't always get sufficient lubrication and have more wear. That may be the cause of the increased oil usage we hear about. That happened to the 5.3 we had in a GMC Envoy. Extra oil usage and the failure of two of the "special" lifters.
