I agree that horizontal isn't the best idea given the wide variance in cell phone sizes (and the constant growth thereof), but falling out isn't really a concern on the street. My samsung stays put on the rubber pad no matter what, and it doesn't even fit perfectly, it's about a millimeter or two too wide. Tested this at 0.9 g lateral acceleration.
