Had the same exact outcome. I checked the oil initially, after I changed it, it showed nearly full. I drove it a few hundred miles then one day, checked again, after it had been sitting awhile, and it was below half way on the dipstick. I added 3/4 quart then it went to the second dot (overfilled). I also noticed a puff of light smoke (not fuel) from a cold startup. So I drained the 3/4 quart back out. After my little fiasco, I'd recommend adding ten quarts and leave it be. These dipsticks are hard to read and from now on I will only use it to make sure there is oil in the pan not to determine the exact level. Ten quarts with new filter and that's it!
