It just removes a variable on NA cars, just so you don't have that variation from when your right foot gets back onto the gas pedal during a normal shift.
On the 2.0T models, however, NLS can actually improve performance as you don't lose any turbo boost with NLS, while normal shifts will make you lose boost and you will have to build it up again.

I have used NLS when I drove my brothers C7Z but yea I can see that for sure on a small displacement turbo car.
