Let me start by saying I have no brand loyalty at all and this is my first American car. That being said I think people (in general) still see GM and American cars in general as being inferior to their counter parts in some way.
Like oh I was going to get an (Insert German or Japanese vehicle) but I could get the same features and more power for LESS $$ in the (Insert GM vehicle) so I went with that. Instead of both cars costs about the same but I went with the (Insert GM vehicle) because it is superior to the (Insert German or Japanese vehicle) in every way, performance, design, build quality, reliability etc.
I think that is something that Hyundai is doing successfully and although not there yet I think it will happen soon. Also from what little experience I have with GM and American cars in general I think they are trying to head that way and I will say the design and build quality has dramatically improved from what I remember.
