You should also look into the load ratings, and if possible avoid using a tire with a lower load index than whatever your car's OE tire size(s) were.

XL and SL load indexes are not the same (this matters), and small differences in rated load can be accommodated via slightly different inflation pressures. A 275/40 is actually a bigger tire than a 285/35-19 in terms of load capacity at any given pressure is concerned
