Are you saying that when you engage the clutch and let the engine slow the car that you hear the whining? Usually clutching in and letting the car slow naturally would reduce my whine. Mine never made noise when turning though. My entire pinion was rattling around due to the loose nut. There is actually a TSB for the groaning when turning of yours is doing that.
The good news is that GM warranty replaced my differential. If yours has an issue hopefully they would take a look at yours as well.
