There's a great deal of respect between the two companies. I talked to a group of Ford engineers once and they had nothing but good things to say about GM and GM vehicles.
Plus like others have pointed out, joint ventures/tech sharing is nothing new with GM/Ford. Hell there have been spy photos of camo'd F-150s leaving Milford Proving Grounds.
