As far as lubing the "O" ring, might I suggest using vaseline.
It will disappear once over 100º and won't leave any residue, and no danger of swelling the "O" ring.
Used vaseline to hold thrust washers, check balls, and such, while rebuilding automatic transmissions back when I worked at Buick. You can't have stuff floating around in a trans and expect it to work.
Vaseline will vanish once the car is running.
