As far as I know the engine should run until you run out of gas, even without the smart key. For example, start your car and leave your key behind, you should be able to drive and drive. However, if you shut off the engine you will obviously need the smart key to start it again. It would be a safety Issue if your engine would shut off due to a proximity or smart key failure.
As for a max idle timer, never heard of that except as a safety feature with the remote start systems.
