Bad execution isn't the same as a bad idea. Stopping the engine when its not needed, so long as you can get away with it, makes a hell of a lot of sense. Doing such a terrible job at implementing such a system that people take their car into the dealership thinking its broken is inexcusable.
Also: both Dodge and Honda have used cylinder deactivation. Maybe others too.

Have they stuck with DOD?
The new Silverado can shut down 1-7 cylinders. That just sounds like a huge problem down the road.
