I did mine at 1,500 and the fluid looked just fine... The magnetic plugs were quite clean too with just a little buildup.

Personally, I think it is worth doing a drain/fill at least once in the first 5,000 miles or so. Then just follow the manual. No need to do it often unless tracking and it requires it.

That being said, it is very easy to do. Half the work of an oil change, really. Just get a cheap $8 hand pump that connects right on top of the bottle to fill and that's all you need along with a socket wrench and oil catch pan.

Since it takes 1.2 quart of fluid, I was left with 0.8qt or so in my second bottle of fluid, so I will likely just buy another single quart and do it again at 5,000 mile or so and then be done with it for a long time (until 30K or something). Again, it's so easy and relatively cheap to do, why not.
