Engineering explained on youtube has a video how they torture test mobil 1 oils. They basically run them through an LS type v8 engine modified to include way more blow by contaminants than an actual engine, constantly for x number of hours and then test the oil. The idea is to simulate the worst possible scenario for fuel dilution and blow by. The problem is with some direct injection engines including my kia 2.4 is they produce heavy soot similar to a diesel engine. Soot is too small to be filtered out by the oil filter, and it has to be changed. Also city driving and hot and cold cycling can put more wear on the oil.
The GM Oil life monitor actually works pretty well and is much more than a dumb counter. I'd follow that.
