IMHO, any walk down the oil aisle shows "the oil industry" promoting LESS frequent changes. First it was 10,000 mile oil, now it's 15,000 miles. They also don't push the premium gas like they used to. The math on unnecessary purchase of high octane fuel used to add up to $1 billion annually in US alone. Probably hasn't come down much, but at least they don't push it like before.
It's not unnecessary per se, should help keep prices lower for us who actually do need it
