I reinstalled my foam piece when doing my head and cam work, only because I was under the impression that it has a thin layer of a metal like material and it helps keep leaks from going to the intake, and also helps with heat. The sowing machine sounds these engines make is very pronounced with headers though. I can hear mine through the headers even with the foam installed. The heat soak advantage to the foam was my biggest factor though.
